Earth Rise Collective Receives Anonymous Was a Woman Grant to Grow Earth Church

New York, NY — Earth Rise Collective and Habitat Recovery Project (HRP) are honored to receive an Anonymous Was a Woman Environmental Art Grant, administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), a nonprofit supporting artists nationwide through grants, professional development, and resources.

Earth Church is a community-built sanctuary and symbol of resistance, sited near a contested pipeline. Constructed from regional clay, straw, Spanish moss, and site-harvested wood, its honeycomb-inspired earthen forms demonstrate sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based construction. More than a structure, it is a living classroom combining bioconstruction workshops with storytelling circles, uniting communities through hands-on creation, skill-building, and collective resistance to extractive industries.

The grant enables Earth Rise Collective and HRP to expand Earth Church through a second workshop series, additional teach-ins on regenerative practices, and an annual ritual of repair and remembrance: continuing to prove that another world is possible, built by our own hands.

Anonymous Was a Woman uplifts women-identifying artists whose work embodies resilience, care, and cultural transformation. The Environmental Art Grant supports participatory projects that foster ecological awareness and model sustainable futures. Earth Church embodies these values as a collaborative, hands-on act of resistance: merging art, ecology, and activism to reshape how communities connect to the Earth.

From November 15-23 in Vinton, Louisiana, on our 24-acre farm, all abilities are welcome to learn cob/bousillage, light clay straw, bottle bricking, plastering, framing, and tool safety. Participate in teach-ins, share skills with community members, and celebrate your work at our end-of-workshop Friendsgiving gathering. We extend this to anyone who wants to stick their fingers in mud, create communal art, and stand with the Earth, including artists, activists, teachers, students, makers, doers, and dreamers, all working together for clean air, clean soil, and clean water.
